Anniversary Edition Forthcoming
Get Lost in Barbara Rieti's Strange Terrain
30 years after its original publication, Memorial University Press is releasing a 30th Anniversary Edition of Barbara Rieti's iconic work Strange Terrain: The Fairy World in Newfoundland.
In a new forward, Dr. Diane Tye calls Rieti's seminal study "an exemplary ethnographic text" which "highlights the voices and experiences of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."
The fairies of Newfoundland oral tradition are variously envisioned, encountered and interpreted. Rieti's study keeps the narrators at centre stage, describing the specific contexts and manner in which fairy experiences are recounted.
Winner of the Raymond Kilbansky Prize, Rieti’s novel continues to enthral readers and researchers alike, and is now calling a new generation of readers to get lost in the stories and traditions of Newfoundland and Labrador's fairies.
